No flowers in my yard but I can always have flowers on my dress

I thought if I would get out something to wear with a little "spring" to it that it might just lighten my mood.  I've had a terrible cold and winter has just been dragging out forever it seems, like my cold. Believe it or not the sun is actually shining today! I'm off tomorrow for Good Friday so today is a good day although there are still no daffodils to take pretty pictures of I'm hoping they still manage to bloom. They were already in full bloom this time last year. That's a bonus to having a lifestyle blog, you can look back on what was going on the year before. I purchased this dress on eBay last summer for $3.95 plus a couple bucks for shipping. The style appears to be something from days gone by but it is in great shape. After a wash and iron it was like new again. I love the floral print.

I know I am always raving over eBay but I have got the shaft a couple times so you do have to watch what you buy. I don't figure you can go wrong if you purchase from someone with great feedback or stay in the cheap. I bought one dress that someone had actually put scotch tape on the hem that had come undone. I have an aversion to sticky tape so that one went straight to the garbage can. I also will not buy anything electronic after buying two pieces of junk and having to get my money back on a digital picture frame I purchased as a gift that was never even mailed. Three times and you're out eBay electronic peeps! Otherwise I've had wonderful luck.

Speaking of digital picture frames, I just got one awhile back and I love it. I can't believe I hadn't gotten one before now. The brand I got was Aluratek which I've never heard of but so far so good. Extremely easy to use. One thing I just discovered is I can put my memory card in and look at my pictures in a larger frame (mine is 7") before I download them to my computer. I don't have an iPad so in order to look at larger pictures I have always had to download. Now I can take a quick peek first. Any I don't like after a closer look I can delete from my camera before I download or if I don't like any of them I can delete and start over without ever having to fire up my computer. My husband doesn't mess with pictures or even get on the computer very much so he's actually enjoying the digital frame more than I am. After moving into a much smaller house I was unable to put up a lot of pictures due to space so this way we can see all our favorites in one place. I have a Bedford charging station (which I love) that I got from Pottery Barn. I keep the frame plugged up  in the back of the charging station so you can't see a cord. I heard if you get a frame that takes batteries it burns through them pretty quick . I keep the frame set on a timer so the pictures run through the day and then it shuts off automatically. It's pretty sweet!

Do you ever have one of those things happen like you'll be thinking of a song and then it will play on the radio? I have weird stuff like that happen all the time to me. The other night I was telling my husband that there was a new show coming on I wanted to start watching and I said "You've probably seen the commercial for it" and at the very second that came out of my mouth the commercial came on. Well, I have a story about these boots I have on. I bought them late last summer on a whim at Burlington Coat Factory. They didn't cost much and they were green, enough said and I thought they would be something I could wear on a special occasion like a Lady Gaga concert :o) Although they are certainly not something I would have entertained buying, much less wearing, a while back before all the great inspiration from the blogs I read.

The next day my bff, Jennifer, texted me a picture of a pair of purple boots she had bought on a whim herself which is also unlike her. We were texting pictures back and forth of our strangely colored boots we'd bought at the same time and laughing about our Twilight Zone moments we have had.  I then put them away in my closet and they haven't been on my feet since. We've had a lot of moisture one way or the other and I haven't wanted to get them wet. Or at least that's what I told myself until today. Today I thought I sure needed to wear my boots. I get to work and I see on the internet that today is Lady Gaga's birthday. I had to laugh! I am taking it as a sign that me and Jennifer need to go see Lady Gaga in our new boots! You ready girl? ♥

You can see the original official video here from my Easter post last year and also with some pictures from the video here on my former blog.
I obviously love this song! It's a jukebox favorite :o)

It's never gonna warm up so I might as well wear my gorgeous coat

It's the end of March and it's still snowing. Not that I'm really complaining because it is beautiful and we didn't get much last year but I do have to say enough is enough, though. It could have been kinder to my work schedule if it was going to keep this up. I haven't had to miss any work due to all this mess. I was so hoping for a snow day today! After all I have the first season of The Walking Dead in black and white I've been dying to watch. I did get off early a couple of days but no snow days. Also, I was hoping to be photographing daffodils by now, not snow. I heard on the news that Punxsutawney Phil had been indicted by one of our local prosecutors for falsely predicting an early spring on Groundhog's Day. Guess I'm not the only one that thinks enough is enough. Phil must have predicted an early release from his job to his handler if he didn't set things straight because he stepped up and took the blame so regardless of Phil's bad prediction he will receive a pardon. However I hope he plans to hide out awhile until everyone thaws out a bit around here ♥

♥ Coat - Modcloth sleek and sable coat This coat is no longer available on Modcloth. I looked a bit online to see if I could locate it but I was unable to find anything. The label says Latte.
♥ Boots - Vintage 1990's
♥ Sweater - Eddie Bauer
♥ Tights - JC Penny's in Ivory

I purchased this coat to wear to the Matchbox Twenty show when I heard the weather was going to be below zero and sleeting but after I got it I realized it was a little too much coat to lay in a seat at a concert. The coat is extremely thick and heavy. I figured that I would have to wait until next year to wear it. I got it on sale but I think it would have been worth full price. I love it! It's almost more like a thick dress, though, and would be perfect for an outdoor event in the cold. I didn't think that event would come to pass this year after all but look here it is March and I'm able to wear my coat after all. I think I'm going groundhog hunting!

A year with my iPhone

It's been almost a year since I took the plunge from media phone to smart phone. My granddaughter wanted a phone and the one I had was perfect for a little girl. Plus it gave me the excuse to upgrade to a smartphone. I don't really like to talk on the phone much so I thought I would actually get some use from my plan if I had a phone that I could do more on. The downside was the higher cost but if I used my phone more in whatever context it would be justifiable in my mind. Anything I could do to convince myself was good enough for me! I decided to go with an iPhone since I was somewhat familiar with Apple since I already had an account for my iPod. I easily set up my phone using my Apple ID and was able to purchase apps right away. At that time the 4S was the newest phone and even though the 5 came out soon afterwards I'm perfectly pleased with the model I got. I love it! If you are borderline on taking the plunge for yourself, I say go for it! You won't be sorry. It's definitely worth the extra monthly cost over a regular or media phone. I probably still don't know the half of what all it will do but I know I'm having alot of fun playing with it.

I would think that it's not necessarily the smart phone you choose, although there are lots of great choices, but rather the apps you get that make your phone your phone. I would suggest doing some research to find which phone appeals to you and then also to research your apps before downloading. There are alot of free apps but most of those have ads on them and I find they take longer to load. I live in the country and longer to load is not something that works especially well for me so I usually look for recommendations and then buy the one that has the best reviews. Some are free regardless so purchase may not always be an option. I also don't want to fill my phone with apps I am not going to ever use. I'd rather spend the couple of bucks, if possible, and have a nice app that runs with no ads. Of course, they are changing all the time and what's the best one day can be pasay the next so rather than trendy I usually choose the popular, time withstood ones. Most of your favorite websites have their own apps nowadays. All you have to do is search the app store and you'll be sure and find what you are looking for. I did a post on camera apps awhile back while I was organizing my phone which you can see here. If you are a social butterfly then you'll go bananas being able to post straight from your phone.

The phone is rather fragile so I suggest you buy a case as soon as you get your phone. I decided on a Kate Spade case from eBay and it's been sturdy and protective. It has stayed on the phone well and hasn't slipped or broken so far. A year later my phone still looks new. The case has a few knicks and dings on it so without the case the phone would not look so new. I also crocheted myself a cover to keep stuff from getting on my phone while bouncing around in my purse. Be sure and take care of your investment. I did purchase the insurance for just in case anyway :o) I love my phone and feel it is one of the best purchases I have ever made! ♥

Second day of spring and we got snow once more. Yikes! I'm so ready for warmer weather!
Pictures taken with my awesome iPhone :o)

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Since I read that Google reader was closing here soon I knew I had to find some place else to read my favorite blogs. With doing a bit of research I think Bloglovin is probably the way to go. I decided to open an account and apparently I had been there before and set the account up but never went back. I don't like to have too many applications that do the same thing I guess. I get overloaded with so much internet sometimes. I'm excited to be trying something new, though. Anyways, you have to claim your blog by adding a link onto a post so that is the reason for this one. Hope it works! Come follow me ♥

Lazy weekend treat ~ French Toast with Praline Topping

Around the household we've all been giving it our all not to be sick with a cold. It's one of those things where you don't feel bad enough to stay home in bed but you don't feel like doing anything either. To boot I don't think I've quite gotten used to daylight savings time. Even poor Fadra has been sneezing! We were kind of expecting our granddaughter so we hadn't made any plans but then she ended up spending the weekend with her family so a free weekend was at hand. Too bad we weren't up to getting out and drinking some green beer. You can see my post about St. Patrick's Day from last year here. I had bare legs and was thrilled on a spring day! This year I wasn't feeling too lively. To make matters worse it was a dreary, rainy day. Regular winter gear required. Since neither of us felt much up to doing anything in particular we just decided we wouldn't do anything at all. I can't remember the last time neither of us had anything that we had to do so why not make the best of it by just being lazy and enjoying each other's company. After all we had plenty of television to catch up on and the newest Total Recall movie waiting in an envelope from Netflix (btw, we both really liked the movie). The only thing I needed to do was go to the grocery and the couch was all mine.

One of the fun things about laying about the house is I like to cook a bit. I don't get much of a chance to cook much just for the two of us so once in a while I like to do something special and this was the perfect time for something smelling great in the oven. I first made this french toast recipe for my Christmas morning get together and everyone loved it! It is delish! One mistake I made was that I filled my pan a bit too full and it overran a bit. I didn't save that extra bread. I went ahead and threw it in the pan. It looked like I had room but I didn't think about the bubbling that would occur. I corrected that mistake this time so my oven is nice and clean. I also love pecans so I did add more of those to the recipe. My favorite syrup is Mrs. Butterworth's. I also love strawberries with this sort of dish. Oh and don't forget the bacon. Yum! Yum!

I don't eat alot of sweets but this is one of the best things you will ever eat! OMG so good! ♥

  • 1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Dash salt
  • Praline Topping, recipe follows
  • Maple syrup

Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

Praline Topping:

  • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well.

Spring forward

Just the thought of springing forward wears me out, let alone actually springing forward. It makes me feel like I need to spring into action and do something spring worthly this minute like clean my whole house from top to bottom but it feels like father time is making me and I don't want to, though. Those first couple of days after the change of time makes me feel like I've already sprung my spring and hitting that couch to watch tv or even going to bed early is all I can think of wanting to do. I can spring clean anytime but how often do I have a zombie show waiting for me. Well, maybe more than the normal person and once in awhile for sure but you know what I mean.

I did manage to get out of the house yesterday and I found a couple of lonely flowers which you can see above. I think they may be some of the same bunch from last year that you can see pictures of here. I can't wait to see if some of the things I planted last fall come up. If they come up that is, since I have a problem with squirrels eating my bulbs. I'm hoping they made it through the winter. I have lots of daffadils beginning to sprout now. There is nothing that says spring more than a single flower shooting up to the sun on the first day the sun actually felt warm or a yard full of Robins. I want to get some type of bird feeder this summer so we can do a bit of bird watching. It doesn't seem possible that less than a week ago we had 8" of snow because yesterday temps reached above 60. Crazy weather! You can read all about daylight savings time on wikipedia here while I go take a nap or watch The Walking Dead ♥

Little Robin Redbreast
Sat upon a tree;
Up went Pussy-cat,
Down went he.
Down came Pussy-cat,
And away Robin ran;
Says little Robin Redbreast
“Catch me if you can.”

Little Robin Redbreast
Hopped upon a wall;
Pussy-cat jumped after him,
And almost got a fall.

Little Robin chirped and sang,
And what did Pussy say?
Pussy-cat said “Mew,”
and Robin flew away.
